The Indian Society of Engineering Geology (ISEG) serves as the official India National Group of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). Founded in 1965, the ISEG is a professional forum for specialists in geology, civil engineering, and geotechnics.
Established in Kolkata, the ISEG was created to bridge the gap between geologists and engineers working on infrastructure projects like dams, tunnels, and highways. It promotes the study of engineering geology and allied sciences.
ISEG publishes the annual Journal of Engineering Geology and a bi-annual newsletter, ISEG News. The society recently held EGCON 2025, an international conference on engineering geology and geohazards, in New Delhi to mark its 60th anniversary.

The ISEG represents India on the global stage as the national counterpart of the IAEG. ISEG members are encouraged to join the IAEG India National Group to participate in international forums and access global research commissions.
The Indian Society of Engineering Geology completed 60 years of its meaningful existance on 15 October, 2025. 60 years is a long time span for the society to revisit its accomplishments and ponder on areas which remained to be addressed. What makes its special in its sustenance is that the society across six decades has always shown an aspirational trajectory that has remained in sync with demands of time.
Presently, ISEG has ~1900 Life Members with ~260 IAEG affiliations.
ISEG WEG Members
ISEG is committed to fostering greater participation and inclusion of women across all its activities and professional opportunities — forming part of a broader initiative to enhance diversity within the Society.
As a significant step in this direction, WEG — a pan-India group of Women Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers — has been established to bring together and support women in the field of engineering geology.
Through this initiative, ISEG aims to encourage active participation by recognizing and promoting the contribution of women, and be a testimony to changing times when women are voluntarily choosing and excelling in a challenging field-based profession.
WEG is committed to creating a supportive platform for knowledge sharing, mentorship, and professional development , enabling women to connect, collaborate, and grow within the discipline.
By facilitating technical interactions, leadership opportunities, and visibility in professional forums, the initiative aspires to empower women at all stages of their careers — building a more inclusive, diverse, and dynamic engineering geology community.
ISEG YEG Members
The Indian Society of Engineering Geology (ISEG) is committed to strengthening its future by actively promoting the interests and engagement of Young Engineering Geologists (YEGs) and enhancing their involvement in the activities of the society.
To increase the number of young members is a step in that direction, to shoulder additional responsibility, thereby ensuring continuity and long-term sustainability of the Society.
The initiative also aims to address the professional and individual aspirations of YEGs by creating multiple opportunities for meaningful engagement.
This includes organising and facilitating events that promote networking within the YEG community and foster stronger connections with senior members.
Emphasis is placed on supporting the technical and professional development of young practitioners through demand-driven training, mentoring programmes, and meaningful exposure to work opportunities.
The initiative further promotes effective communication and collaboration among YEG members through the use of digital platforms.
Overall, this effort is directed towards ensuring the growth of younger generation as future ambassadors within ISEG.
ISEG IAEG Members
The IAEG is a worldwide scientific society founded in 1964 and affiliated with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). It promotes research, improves teachings, and disseminate results of engineering geological activities globally. It comprises over 4,800 members and 68 national groups, with official languages being English and French. The IAEG grants prestigious medals like the Hans Cloos Medal and the Richard Wolters Prize to outstanding professionals are conferred under the banner of IAEG.
